  50. The new features in version 6.91 are:

  52. * GENERAL IMPROVEMENTS
  53. The feature introduced at v6.9 to shadow a file if it's attributes have changed was found to 
  54. cause unnecessary repetitive backing up of files if the destination server is backed up overnight
  55. to tape. Some tape backup systems remove the file's Archive attribute as a means of identifying
  56. the files that have been backed up. This attribute change can cause Shadow to re-backup the file.
  57. Shadow has been changed to ignore changes to the Archive attribute but to recognise changes to the
  58. other attributes such as Read Only, Hidden, System and Compressed.

  88. * SAVE SPACE
  89. Use WinZip compatible file compression to save space on backup drives.

  91. * DEPLOYMENT
  92. Use DOS Environment Variables anywhere in the backup spec and default 
  93. shadow folder to enable a standard setup to be distributed to users.

  95. * MORE ACCURATE SPECIFICATIONS
  96. Sub folders can be given different backup spec settings to their parent folder. 
  97. /X exclusion specs and phrases can now be conditioned by /d= to improve accuracy.

  100. File Read Only, Hiden, Archive etc. attribute changes are now included in /2WayIdentical mode.
  101. You can now open files using the Query and Log right mouse popup menus.
  102. Fixed problem where Shadow was preventing NT4 from shutting down.
  103. Items in the default shadow folder dropdown can now be removed from the list using right click menu.
  104. Improved remote connection (/e) function that did not previously work in NT.

  115. The new features in version 6.7 are:
  116.  
  117. * FULL SYNCHRONIZATION
  118. You can now use Shadow to manage 1-way and 2-way full
  119. synchronization of files and folders, on any number of PCs/backup
  120. devices, to make them identical. 
  121.  
  122. Includes intelligent management of file and folder deletions and
  123. renaming. Changes made on either the source or destination (on any
  124. of the PCs covered by the Shadow Specification) will be
  125. replicated automatically. 
  126.  
  127. Deleted files can be stored automatically in a sub-folder for safety.
  128.  
  129. Put simply, this means that you can be sure your backup has identical
  130. files and folder structures to your working environment regardless of
  131. whether you have added new files, changed existing ones, deleted,
  132. renamed or reorganised your work.

  135. * IMPROVED SAFETY
  136. Increase the safety of your backup using the new 'safe copy' option.
  137. This option guards against file corruption in the event of a system or
  138. network crash while your backup is taking place.

  140. Files are first backed up to a temporary file and then renamed as
  141. appropriate if the copy was successful. This ensures that your working
  142. files are never lost.

  145. * APPLICATION DATA
  146. Automatically close a running application before the application files
  147. are backed up. The application is restarted again automatically once
  148. the backup is complete. This is useful for applications that 'lock' their
  149. data while they are open such as email and database software.

  152. * EASIER TO READ HELP
  153. Help forms now remember their size and position making it easier for
  154. you to get help quickly. Just hit F1 to get context sensitive help or click
  155. on the magic wand for guidance on configuring your backup.

  158. * INCREASED FLEXIBILITY
  159. Backup the same file to more than one destination within the same
  160. backup run. If your requirements for synchronizing data cover many
  161. PCs, servers and backup devices you will find version 6.7 performs the
  162. task more quickly that the version you are using.

  165. * LIST SORTING
  166. You can now sort the Query list on any of the columns in the query
  167. grid. This means you can get a clearer view of your new, changed and
  168. deleted files and increases your control over your backup process.

  171. * GRID VIEW FOR EASIER REVEWING
  172. The Shadow Log is now presented in a grid to provide you with a better
  173. record of the files that have been backed up or deleted and of the
  174. warnings that are generated if Shadow can't perform any of the tasks
  175. you have specified.

  179. Various minor bugs have also been fixed, most of which you have
  180. probably never discovered.

  185. The new features in version 6.6 are:

  188. * REMOTE CONNECTION
  189. If you connect to your office servers using a LAN connection
  190. in your office and a remote dial-up connection when you work
  191. away from your office (e.g. over the phone line from home)
  192. you can now prevent your backup running over the remote
  193. (slower) connection but still run your backup when you connect
  194. via the (faster) LAN. This is an option that you can set
  195. against individual specification lines (/e) and operates
  196. automatically to save you remote connection time.

  199. * ONE WAY FULL SYNCHRONIZATION
  200. You can now use Shadow to fully synchronize (in one direction)
  201. two or more folders to make them identical, including deleting
  202. files in the destination folder that no longer exist on the
  203. source folder.

  205. This is a very useful however please use it with caution.
  206. You should not use it on specification lines that represent your
  207. actual backups or ones that specify folders that are also used
  208. by other people on a server. Experiment with it using test
  209. folders and files so that you understand how it works. Also, set
  210. the multiple file versions feature to at least 1 and Shadow will
  211. keep the most recent version of a deleted file for safety.

  214. * PROMPT BEFORE DELETE FOR SAFETY
  215. If you set the /q switch to "Deletes" in the spec builder Shadow
  216. will query all file deletions. 
  217.  
  218.  
  219. * USABILITY OPTIONS
  220. There are three additional options.
  221.  
  222. The first selects between Shadow's own file copy method
  223. (which displays a progress bar for large files) and Windows own
  224. file copy method (which doesn't).
  225.  
  226. The second option prevents the specification validation feature
  227. from being set when you make a change to the shadow specification.
  228.  
  229. The third option switches between closing and minimizing the
  230. application when you use the normal application close X. 
  231.  
  232.  
  233. * SAVES SCREEN SIZE AND POSITION
  234. The on-screen backup log and query log list sizes are now saved.
  235. Position the horizontal splitter where you like to see it and it
  236. will stay there.

  239. * GRID VIEW FOR EASE OF VIEWING
  240. The on-screen query list is now displayed in a grid with
  241. resizable columns.

  244. * INCREASED FLEXIBILITY FOR QUERY PROMPTING
  245. You can prevent individual specification lines from being queried
  246. if you use the Query All Saves option on the main screen. On the
  247. specification line set the /q switch to No in the Spec Builder.

  250. * IMPROVED USE OF SPECIFICATION GROUPINGS
  251. If you use the Shadow Volumes feature you can now select [All Volumes],
  252. which will display all your specification lines, and also <blank>,
  253. which will display only the lines that are not assigned to a volume.

  255. If you don't use the volumes feature and you have many specification
  256. lines then please read the help for volumes as they enable you to group
  257. specification lines together.

  260. * VOLUME OPTIONS
  261. Individual volumes can have Run on Startup and Start Timer options set.
  262. Right click on the volume name to set the options.
  263.  
  264.  
  265. * IMPROVED BACKUP TO REMOVABLE DISKS
  266. You can now have multiple Default Backup Folders. This is useful if you
  267. use a removable disk drive for your backups e.g. a Zip drive. Set the
  268. default backup folder to a folder on the device drive and Shadow will
  269. automatically detect which disk you have inserted (using the volume name).

  272. * MORE FLEXIBILITY
  273. Agressive backups (backing up over a read only or newer file) are now
  274. automatically listed in the Query list with an appropriate icon to
  275. highlight that your attention is needed to decide what to do. If you
  276. use the Agressive Backup mode then your agressive backups will continue
  277. to be performed without the warning query.

  280. * BETTER INTERPRETATION OF YOUR SPECIFICATION
  281. The sequence used to process the specification lines has been made more
  282. logical. More accurately described specification lines will now reliably
  283. override a less accurately described line that covers the same file.
